"In this study data was data was collected from 1,500  people over 14 years. The study indicated that those with a vitamin D insuffiency had a 30% increased risk of developing pancreatic cancer.

“In light of the high prevalence of vitamin D insufficiency in the population, further studies should examine whether increasing vitamin D levels impacts the incidence of this highly lethal malignancy,” wrote the researchers, led by Brian Wolpin from the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Harvard Medical School.

Pancreatic cancer is the fourth leading cause of cancer death (approx. 37,500 a year) in the US. according to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network."

Vitamin D is necessary for the maintenance of healthy calcium and phosphorous levels in the body. Vitamin D3, also known as cholecalciferol, is a form of Vitamin D that the body manufactures when skin is exposed to UV radiation from the sun (hence the name, the Sunshine Vitamin). It's converted from food sources and sunlight into its active form, calcitriol, by the liver and kidneys. As well, most of the U.S. milk supply and many breakfast cereals, juices, yogurts, and spreads are fortified with vitamin D. The best natural sources of vitamin D are fatty fish such as salmon, tuna, and mackerel, although it’s also found in smaller amounts in beef liver, cheese, and egg yolks. Scientific evidence of the role of Vitamin D in supporting many other aspects of health is growing every day. Besides helping to build strong bones, Vitamin D has been associated with heart health, support for immune and nervous system function, and men’s sexual health.* It's estimated that as many as forty percent of Americans a significant percentage of adults have less than adequate intake of Vitamin D levels, placing them at risk for a wide variety of health concerns. The elderly, alcoholics and strict vegetarians are particularly at risk for deficiency and should consider regular supplementations. Individuals with darker skin pigments may also be at increased risk, as darker skin contains higher levels of melanin, which may inhibit the skin's ability to produce Vitamin D from sunlight.
